Meralco PowerGen Corporation (MGEN), through its thermal unit Panay Energy Development Corporation (PEDC), has partnered with local government, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and community organizations to provide a sustainable livelihood program for fisherfolk in Barangay Ingore, Iloilo City.

The initiative, known as the Sustainable Mud Crab Fattening through Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) project, equips the Ingore-Baldoza Fisherfolk Association with environmentally responsible aquaculture technology aimed at increasing income while preserving marine biodiversity.

“PEDC’s commitment to sustainable development is reflected in this project, which empowers local communities and promotes environmental stewardship. As an MGEN company, we continue to drive economic impact and stay true to our mission of Powering a Better Future,” said Felino M. Bernardo, MGEN Thermal President and CEO.

The program is implemented in collaboration with Taytay Sa Kauswagan (TSKI), a microfinance NGO with extensive experience in community empowerment, while the LGU of Barangay Ingore and DOST provide technical guidance to ensure long-term sustainability. The project is intended as a model that can be replicated in other coastal communities across the Philippines.

Officials from MGEN, TSKI, DOST, and the Ingore-Baldoza Fisherfolk Association attended the launch, highlighting a multi-sectoral approach to community development and sustainable aquaculture.

PEDC operates a 278.4 MW coal-fired power plant in Iloilo City and plays a key role in supporting energy security and economic growth in Panay Island. The company’s backing of community programs such as this demonstrates its ongoing strategy to integrate social responsibility with energy operations.

How can programs like MGEN’s Sustainable Mud Crab Fattening project shape the future of community-driven aquaculture and sustainable livelihoods in the Philippines?
