Aboitiz Renewables, SNAP clinch Asian Power Awards honors

Aboitiz Renewables Inc. and the SN Aboitiz Power Group (SNAP) have secured multiple recognitions at the 2025 Asian Power Awards in Kuala Lumpur, underscoring the growing role of Philippine-based players in the region’s renewable energy and digital innovation landscape.

Aboitiz Renewables was named Independent Power Producer of the Year, joining awardees from Australia, India, Indonesia, and Pakistan. The citation was anchored on the company’s 173-megawatt-peak Calatrava Solar Project in Negros Occidental, currently the largest solar asset in its renewable portfolio and now fully operational.

The Calatrava facility feeds power into the national grid, adding scale to the country’s solar capacity at a time when the Philippines is accelerating its energy transition. Beyond generation, the project was also cited for employment generation and community support in its host area.

SNAP, a joint venture between Norway-based Scatec and Aboitiz Renewables, was recognized separately as Information Technology Project of the Year and Innovative Power Technology of the Year for the Philippines.

The IT award was conferred for SNAP’s Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Program (DSAI), an internal initiative that trains employees as data scientists and applies analytics across its hydroelectric portfolio. According to the company, the program has been used to improve forecasting accuracy, optimize operations, and enhance overall efficiency in its plants.

For innovative power technology, judges cited the Magat Turbine Efficiency Prediction Tool, which uses historical plant data to forecast real-time turbine performance at the 360-megawatt Magat Hydroelectric Power Plant in Isabela. The system is designed to help maximize available generation from one of Luzon’s largest hydro facilities.

“We believe that digital transformation is key to unlocking the full potential of renewable energy. At SNAP, innovation is geared towards helping energize a sustainable energy future for all,” said SNAP President and CEO Joseph Yu.

“The DSAI program has created a self-sustaining ecosystem of innovators, one that is built to continuously identify opportunities for optimization and ensure the entire business remains disruption-proof.”

The Asian Power Awards recognize power companies and projects across Asia for excellence in generation, innovation, and sustainability, and are closely watched by industry stakeholders as a benchmark for regional best practices.
